Salem Kiwanis First Annual Golf Tournament

Friday, September 17th, 2010.  Registration opens at 7:00 am.  Shotgun tee-off at 8:00 am.  Lunch and trophy presentation will follow immediately after the round is over and will take place at the Oak Tree Restaurant and Lounge (at the golf courese).

Gordon Belson announced that our annual “Runaway” public service spot will be on local TV.  Gordon narrates the spot which asks children who have run away from home to call an 800 number which in turn will notify parents that the child is safe.

Had 78 kid-types at the SENCC Christmas Party put on by the Salem Kiwanis Club. Plenty of yummy pizza for all, a visit by Santa and great goodie bags! Thank you Salem Kiwanis! It was a great afternoon!! (from my post on Facebook).

Just wanted to let you know how much we appreciated the party!  The kids were pretty amped up with anticipation of winter break and Christmas.. some behaviors were a little over the edge but I know the kids were awfully excited about Santa being there and having pizza instead of the usual afternoon snack!!  A HUGE thanks to the Kiwanis Club for all their hard work to put together a very fun time for our community center kids. It was, for some of the kids, the only Christmas they would have this year.

Laura Morett is a 39-year-old Hawaiian mother, wife of 21 years and also a grandmother. Her beauty is complimented by the fact that one of her occupations is fitness instructor, which helps her stay in shape and gives her the energy to keep up with her three kids and two-year-old grandchild. When she is not spending time with her family, working out or riding her Harley, this conservative Christian is running the lobby message center at the Oregon State Capitol building for over 400 lobbyists.

Similar religious and political beliefs, as well as the fact that her daughter had a child at 18, has Laura referring to herself as a, “fit version of Sarah Palin.” Laura enjoys listening to Christian music and is studying women’s ministry. In addition, Laura counsels couples in her church based on her experiences in a long-lasting marriage with a man she describes as her other half.

Determined and competitive, she freely admits that she wants to win SURVIVOR for the money but in doing so claims that she would never do anything to compromise her faith to get it.

Currently, Laura resides in Salem, Ore. and her birthday is July 30th.

The Salem Kiwanis Club sorts food every third Thursday of the month.

Selling poinsettias is one of our clubs biggest fundraisers for the year.  The money raised goes directly into serving the kids of our community.    If you regularly decorate your house during the holiday season then consider buying 1 or 2 poinsettias from our club.

When you buy poinsettias from a Salem Kiwanis Club member, you’ll be helping to benefit two causes with one simple purchase:

* You’ll be helping to support the Kiwanis Club and the hundreds of children that benefit from our projects through out the year.

* You’ll be supporting our local business marketplace because all of our plants come from Egans Gardens located right here in Salem.

Egans has a great reputation for having high quality products. Reports from people who bought their poinsettias last year said their plants lasted all the way into spring. Also, we deliver to you. All you have to do is place the order and we’ll do the rest. The flowers come in 6.5″ pot with a foil wrapper. Choose red, white, or pink. The price is $13.00 each, and remember they’re hand delivered to your home or office. You’ll love the beautiful flowers and you’ll know that you have helped our community.

The deadline for orders is October 31st and the flowers will be delivered during the first week in December.

The primary goal of Kiwanis Camp is to provide individuals with varying disabilities the opportunity to engage in an exciting array of recreational activities in an outdoor setting.

While these experiences are new to many of our participants, staff work together to assist each individual in achieving maximum success. Counselors work one-on-one with campers to ensure that they get the most out of their camp experience; this can include assisting

some participants in meeting their basic everyday needs, such as toileting, bathing, and feeding. Kiwanis Camp counselors, practice new skills while stretching their vision of who they are and what they can do. Counselors are never required to work alone; trained and capable staff members help in all aspects of the camp experience.

HISTORY & PURPOSE

Founded by the Montavilla Kiwanis Club in 1933 under the leadership of Cy Gengelbach, Kiwanis Camp originated as a camp for low income youth; and since the 1950’s has served children, youth and adults who have disabilities. Training partnership was established with the Special Education Department at Portland State University in 1972. The camp program provides camping experiences for children, youth, and adults with varying disabilities, and a practicum training experience for students interested in special and general education and related human service professions. human service professions.

An example of a Kiwanis Trauma Doll

The Downtown Salem Kiwanis Club, as well as their recently created Keizer Kiwanis Club Satellite, is preparing to cut, stuff,and sew Trauma Dolls for Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.  Naturally you might as, “What’s a Trauma Doll?’

Trauma Dolls are small plain white muslin dolls without even standard features like eyes, mouth or clothing.

To alleviate the fear and apprehension most kids have of hospitals, nurses use the dolls to explain treatments.

When a child requires an intravenous shot, nurses give a trauma doll the shot first. When a child needs an arm or leg cast, the nurses put a paper mini-cast on the doll.

With the dolls, kids get the feeling that they’re not the only ones who are traumatized, the doll is, too.

A pack of crayons is given to the children with each doll.

The kids are then encouraged to depict their injuries and feelings by coloring on the doll,

Coloring the dolls often acts as a sedative for the children, many of whom are frightened not only by their injuries but by the unfamiliar and threatening hospital environment.

A positive experience on a child’s first visit can really project to the future of their medical care.

The trauma dolls also make work easier for the nurses, who are often looked upon by children as the source of their boo-boos.

They’re rewarding to nurses who don’t like to be the ones inflicting pain all the time.  The nurses become seen as healers.

The trauma doll concept was devised by a Kiwanis Club in Australia in 1993.

We need 5 to 10 people, armed with a pair of sharp scissors to come and help cut out the templates for this years trauma dolls.  If you have sewing skills and would like to help sew the templates together, then those services would be welcomed as well.  Additional meetings will be held to help stuff the dolls once they’re sewn together.

The next meeting for the Trauma Doll Assembly is going to be held October 8th, at the Town & Country Lanes on River Road in Keizer.  The meeting will start at 6:30 and go until 7:30.

I’ll update this blog on a weekly basis, and give you a new graphic to illustrate our progress as well.

The winning ticket for the 2009 Ford Mustang Convertible was pulled at the Oregon State Fair on September 7th 2009, and for the first time ever – in our many years of raffling off Mustangs – it was won be a Kiwanian.  Nick Nichols of the Willamina Kiwanis Club is pictured above receiving the keys for his new Mustang.  Nick is also a past KDCCP Boardmember.                 Congratulations Nick!

The 2010 car is in and tickets are for sale.  It is a red Mustang two door coupe….but it is so new we don’t have many details yet.  Photo and details to follow.

Pricing…Tickets are still $5 each, or a “book” of 5 for $20.
